Marimo moss balls are a popular and fun addition to aquascapes. Recognisable by their spherical shape and soft, velvety fur, Marimo Moss Balls are a premium aquatic plant and not to be confused with Java or Christmas mosses. The species are native to Lake Akan in Japan, where they are believed to bring good luck and are often called a ‘love plant.’ In Japanese, ‘Mari’ means ball and ‘mo’ means algae. A Marimo is a rare growth form of the species where the algae grow into large green balls with a velvety appearance. Marimo moss balls are for sale online in Australia from Exoaquaristic.
These plants are more like pets.
It’s useful to think of Marimo moss balls as pets, as these are active flora with a lifespan of up to two 200 years, making them ideal family heirlooms.
They actually benefit the ecosystem of your aquascape
These plants can provide oxygen, and even suck up nitrate and other nasties that find their way into your tank. Marimo moss balls harbour beneficial bacteria and help combat excess algae growth.
Not only is the shape and feel of Marimo moss balls unique, but these aquatic plants are also mobile. As a result of photosynthesis, Marimo moss balls are able to roll around tanks, floating or sinking in the water as a result of light.
Marimo moss balls can even have babies.
During natural division after 3-4 years, small lumps of baby marimo balls will appear and eventually detach on their own. These sturdy little plants can be anchored, but don’t need to be, and can float freely in your tank.
Marimo are a hassle-free addition to your aquascape
They thrive in most environments, and don’t require as much light as most aquatic plants. Marimo moss balls can even survive in very small tanks, with very little maintenance. Although Marimo moss balls grow only 5mm per year, the growth rate is steady.
These no-fuss aquatic plants are great for avid aquascapers who might be short on time, or for aquascapers who already have a well-established aquascape and don’t want to complicate the ecosystem with a high-maintenance addition.
